A Few Tidbits from Calvin

As I was glancing through Book two, Chapter six of Calvin’s Institutes today, I came across a few sentences so thrillingly substantive (and speaking volumes about Calvin’s redemptive-historical hermeneutic) that I had to share them. As follows.

“From this it is now clear enough that, since God cannot without the Mediator be propitious toward the human race, under the law Christ was always set before the holy fathers as the end to which they should direct their faith.”

“Here I am gathering a few passages of many because I merely want to remind my readers that the hope of all the godly has ever reposed in Christ alone. All the other prophets also agree.”

“God willed that the Jews should be so instructed by these prophecies that they might turn their eyes directly to Christ in order to seek deliverance.”

“…unless God confronts us in Christ, we cannot come to know that we are saved.”

  1. Excellent statements of Christocentricity!

On another note, I remember that you posted on the Regulative Principle and Psalter-Only worship awhile back. My pastor loaned me a book on the subject that I felt you might be interested in. An excellent book for the Christmas list:

Covenantal Worship by R.J. Gore Jr., published by P&R. The book is subtitled “Reconsidering the Puritan Regulative Principle.”

I just thought you might like to know about it.

Thanks for the recommendation. Maybe I’ll look into it.
