Killing Sin (music album)

Some time ago, I did a post on Shai Linne’s hip-hop album, “The Solus Christus Project”. A little after that, Shai sent me two albums from Timothy Brindle, his label-mate at Lampmode Recordings – the first one called, “The Great Awakening,” and the second called, “Killing Sin.” Both of them are treasure houses of Reformed theology and sound exegesis, hip-hop style. I took the liberty of typing up a few lines from the first few tracks of “Killing Sin,” as an example of the sort of substance that one may find throughout the two albums – but really, the depth of doctrine from beginning to end calls for a fuller acquaintance than these brief samples can provide. So go to www.lampmode.com, and buy the albums.

Killing sin is not a prescription of how to be forgiven
it’s a description of the Christian who is forgiven
by trusting in the risen Christ who took our wrath and affliction

If we take sin lightly, let’s go to the cross to convince us
where he slaughtered the sinless, infinitely valuable Son
who paid an infinite cost for forgiveness
‘Cause that’s the only way the infinitely holy Yahweh could take us off of his hit-list

Some folks seem to think they can continue in sin because they’re forgiven in him – by no means
Yeah, we’re saved through faith in Christ, that’s it – but if we’re saved then we’ll hate unrighteousness
We praise God for his super amazing grace, but killing sin is the fruit of our saving faith
It’s no excuse that we’re totally depraved, ’cause we’re united to Christ who rose up from the grave

And just ’cause we believe in eternal security don’t mean we’re not concerned with personal purity
‘Cause those who’ve been elected, chosen, and predestined
won’t rest ’til the day our souls have been perfected
So we’ll work out our salvation with fear and trembling
but give God the glory, knowing it’s his Spirit’s rendering

Sin is nothing to mess with, plus it’s deceptive
Sin is like excrement covered in whipped cream
It looks sweet, but we’ve discovered its sick scheme
Its lavish passion has attractions that are acting like they give satisfaction
It seems like it has more to offer than the Lord that bought you
But it’s sure to drop you

Through prayer and his power, conquer sins – trust in the Lord’s promises!

“What’s helped you kill sin since you’ve been born again?”
Well, I’d say enjoying Christ more than sin
and seeking him every morning and adoring him…
…Oh yeah, plus I’ve been memorizing scripture
to meditate on the promises in his word,
Yo, this has been huge to conquer sin with this urge
but if I do sin, I hug the bloody cross
where Christ suffered for us to be scrubbed and washed
Then I repent, and then I keep depending
On Christ who ascended to his seat in heaven

Sin is loving anything else more than the Lord

I took the foregoing lyrics from Tim’s album by ear, so I can’t guarantee that they are completely accurate, particularly in spelling and punctuation – for any mistake I made, I beg lenience – Nathan.

Shai was gracious to send me those albums too. I have been meaning to post about them soon, on my blog. Thanks for mentioning them here. I really enjoy the “Killing Sin” album. I don’t know if it would be possible to come close to the level of that album using any other musical genre. It is one of the blessings of that genre.

    Again, blessings because of Christ.

    –Hugging that bloody cross,

Hey these three albums are great i have got “the great awakening” yet but i really want to. i love just learning the lyrics to these and spittin them while i go for walks. i have followed a couple of their hints which lead me to learn alot more about hermenutics and thoelogy. based on just listening to those albums. ive found John Pipers ministry to be very good teaching. especially the How to kill sin series. i also found John Owens book “Of the mortification of sin in believers” i listen to alot of hiphop but these guys are all entirely about teaching good doctrine

as a correction i meant to say i have picked up the great awakening, but have heard it many times on rhapsody.com

    Will,

Thanks for stopping by. It’s great to hear of the edifying results of these doctrinally-rich albums in other people’s lives as well. I have to say that John Piper and John Owen are two of the authors that have most influnced me, also.

    Blessings from the Savior, Nathan

does shai and timothy believe in that calvinistic doctrine of eternal security? we know the bible speaks about eternal security but the calvins take scripture out of context email them and ask them please and please reply

    Kenneth,

The answer to your question is right in the lyrics I included:

“And just ’cause we believe in eternal security don’t mean we’re not concerned with personal purity ‘Cause those who’ve been elected, chosen, and predestined won’t rest ’til the day our souls have been perfected”

Obviously they do believe in eternal security (because that’s what the bible says) but they also believe that all true Christians will grow in grace, and keep on fighting the fight of faith until their souls are perfected in heaven (because that’s what the bible says).

As a side note, it’s unwise to accuse an entire group of people (Calvinists) of a major sin (taking the bible out of context) with no examples or support for your accusation. It’s inflammatory, unloving, and unethical.
