Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

Blessed Are Those Who Mourn
Matthew 5:4

I know what it is to hurt deeply;
I feel more than I can say;
The bill always rings up too steeply
On payment day.

The oceans are full of water;
The clouds are full of rain;
And my heart, in a day of slaughter,
Glutted on pain.

Yet envy I not those who laugh
A laughter of madness not mirth,
Who are lighter than laughter, than chaff,
Who will blow o’er the earth

When the world is seized by sharp woe,
And its people go staggering by,
And all who were happy know
What it is to hurt deeply as I.

I know One whose hurt was more deep
The the sorrows of hell.
He suffered his Cov’nant to keep.
I am well.
