I would argue this is primarily a problem of baptist structure, and the doctrine of separation. More formal churches, that is those with hierarchies and clear denominations, have levels of relationships that can exist between members of neighboring churches which are between "ignore" and sharing communion.

Pitchard,

AMEN! You articulated clearly the thoughts of my heart. I spent the morning pondering and writing on this very subject after reading Tim Challies Blog Tour entry on "Jolly Bloggers" this morning.

Blessing to You - In Christ and For His Sake

David,

Thanks for the link. I browsed around on your blog a little, and I think I'll have to go back -- good stuff.

Yours in Christ,
Nathan

Great post, Nathan. It deserves widespread attention. And personal reflection.

Blessings to you and yours, and on your ministry, in and through Jesus.

Chris,

Thanks for the comment. I just wanted to clarify, that I am also in favor of attaching oneself to a local body -- I hope I didn't word that point too awkwardly in the post, but I was actually arguing for it. I just don't think it should be a decision either to attach yourself to a local body or to be involved with all the believers in your area; I think we should be pursuing both realities.

Your reference about bearing one another's burdens certainly comes into play as well. Thanks again -- keep pressing on for the sake of the Name!

Nathan,

What great thoughts! I appreciate especially the truth that those areas where Christians are persecuted value unity at a much higher level. In fact, I just asked about this in our Sunday school hour yesterday.

I would, however, encourage one to "attach" oneself to a local body. Since leaving college I have learned great lessons in becoming involved perpetually in a local body, because truly then can we "bear one another's burdens" (Gal 6:2).
