Introduction: Basic Greek Grammar

The following files contain, in ten lessons, a very simple overview of New Testament Greek grammar, which I put together for one semester of adult Sunday School, designed for persons who had some previous knowledge of Greek but wanted a thorough review. Noun and adjective declensions are mostly covered, as well as the omega conjugation, with the exception of infinitives and participles. The mi conjugation is not covered at all. If, in the future, I have the opportunity to teach a second semester, I will add the missing elements in a series of future lessons. A couple things to note:

The lessons themselves (with the exception of the first couple) do not contain a listing of new vocabulary or principle parts. At the beginning of the semester I handed out a good-sized list of both, for the student to use throughout the year. I also handed out a comprehensive list of paradigms of all sorts (nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.). The lessons below will need to be supplemented with something of the sort to be useful.

For each lesson, I chose a few pertinent selections from the Greek NT to work through together as a class. Frequently, these included vocabulary and forms that we had not yet covered, which I had to supply as we went along. None of this is included in the lessons; so really, they are not well-designed for self-study. A teacher who already has a good grasp of Greek grammar will be needed to make them useful. Actually, they may not be useful at all anyway, there are much better and more thorough first year Greek grammars available already. I really only wrote these to avoid the expense of purchasing a dozen or so of them for my class. Feel free to use them, but don’t approach them with high expectations.

Finally, for a much better and more useful selection of online resources, I direct the aspiring student of NT Greek to NTGreek.net
